Dawnbook — Privacy Policy
Dawnbook is a gratitude journal and mood calendar for iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch. It is built so that your journal belongs to you and no one else. This policy explains, plainly, what that means.
Dawnbook was called Five until October 2026. Only the name changed; this policy covers the app under both names.
The short version
- We collect nothing. Dawnbook has no accounts, no analytics, no advertising, and no servers. We cannot see what you write.
- Your journal stays with you — on your devices and, if you use iCloud, in your own private iCloud account.
- No tracking, ever. Dawnbook contains no third-party code that tracks you, and we never sell or share your information.
- Apple Health is optional and write-only. If you turn it on, Dawnbook saves your daily mood to Apple Health. It never reads your health data.
- You're in control. Export your journal or delete it — one page or all of it — at any time.
Who we are
Dawnbook is developed and published by GR Design Build LLC ("we", "us"). If you have any question about this policy, see Contact at the end.
Information we collect
None. Dawnbook does not ask for your name, email address, or any other personal details, and there is no sign-up. The app contains no analytics, advertising, or tracking software, and it does not connect to any server operated by us or by anyone on our behalf. Nothing you write, and nothing about how you use the app, is ever sent to us.
Where your journal is stored
Everything you add to Dawnbook — your gratitude lines, intentions, reflections, moods, the "what shaped today" tags, stars, and photos — is created and stored on your device.
- On your device. Your journal is saved inside Dawnbook's private storage on your iPhone or iPad, protected by iOS data protection.
- Widgets. So that Dawnbook's Home Screen and Lock Screen widgets can show your streak and moods, the app keeps a copy of your journal in a private container on the same device that only Dawnbook and its widgets can read. When you log a mood from the widget, it is written to that on-device copy.
- iCloud (optional). If iCloud is enabled on your device, the text of your journal (entries, moods, tags, and stars) syncs through **your own private iCloud account** so it's available on your other devices. This sync is provided by Apple under Apple's Privacy Policy. It is stored in your personal iCloud space; we have no access to it.
- Photos are never uploaded. Photos you attach stay on the device where you added them. They are not synced through iCloud and never leave your device unless you choose to share them.
Photos
When you add a photo, Dawnbook uses Apple's system photo picker. Dawnbook only receives the specific photo you choose — it cannot see the rest of your library — and saves a copy inside the app on your device.
Apple Health
Apple Health support is off by default. If you turn on "Save mood to Apple Health" in Settings, iOS will ask for your permission. With permission, Dawnbook:
- writes each day's mood to State of Mind in the Health app, together with the life areas you tagged that day (for example, fitness or friends);
- never reads any data from Apple Health.
Health data written by Dawnbook stays in Apple Health on your device (and in iCloud if you sync Health data with Apple). We never receive it, and it is never used for advertising, marketing, or any purpose other than showing your mood in Apple Health. It is never shared with third parties. You can turn the setting off at any time, and manage or delete these entries in the Health app. Deleting a page in Dawnbook also removes the mood Dawnbook saved to Health for that day.
Apple Watch
The Apple Watch app lets you add a line of gratitude by dictation. Dictation is provided by Apple's built-in dictation, according to your Apple settings. The resulting text is sent directly from your watch to your paired iPhone using Apple's WatchConnectivity and added to that day's page. It is not sent to us.
Face ID and Touch ID
If you turn on the optional lock, Dawnbook uses Face ID or Touch ID to unlock the app. Authentication is performed entirely by iOS on your device. Dawnbook never receives, stores, or transmits biometric data.
Notifications
If you allow notifications, Dawnbook schedules its reminders (morning, evening, and the weekly and monthly recaps) as local notifications on your device. No information is sent to us or to any third party to deliver them.
Purchases (Dawnbook+)
Dawnbook is free. The optional Dawnbook+ upgrade is sold through the App Store and processed entirely by Apple. We do not receive your name, payment details, or Apple ID. Apple tells the app, on your device, whether Dawnbook+ is active so the extra features can be unlocked.
Sharing and export
Dawnbook only shares something when you ask it to. Exporting your journal (as text or as a PDF) or sharing a recap card creates the file on your device and hands it to the iOS share sheet; where it goes next is entirely your choice.
No tracking, no advertising, no sale of data
Dawnbook does not track you across apps or websites, does not show ads, and does not sell or share personal information — as those terms are defined under the California Consumer Privacy Act or any other law. Because we do not collect or process your personal data, there is no personal data held by us to access, correct, transfer, or delete. Apple acts independently for the services it provides (iCloud, the App Store, Apple Health, dictation) under its own privacy policy.
Children's privacy
Dawnbook is rated 4+ and does not collect personal information from anyone, including children under 13.
Keeping and deleting your data
Your journal is kept until you delete it. You can:
- Export your full journal as text at any time (Settings → Your Data), or as a PDF with Dawnbook+.
- Delete a single page from the page's menu (••• → Delete this page). This removes it from your device and your iCloud, deletes its photos, and removes the mood Dawnbook saved to Apple Health for that day.
- Delete everything with Settings → Your Data → Delete all journal data. This erases every page, mood, and photo from your device and your iCloud, and removes the moods Dawnbook saved to Apple Health.
Deleting the app removes everything stored on that device. If you delete the app without first using Delete all journal data, a text copy may remain in your iCloud and will return if you reinstall Dawnbook; to remove it, reinstall Dawnbook and use Delete all journal data.
Security
Your journal is protected by your device's security and iOS data protection, and optionally by Face ID or Touch ID inside Dawnbook. iCloud data is protected by Apple. Because we don't collect your data, it can't be exposed by a breach of our systems.
Changes to this policy
If we change this policy, we will update the effective date above and publish the revised version at this address. If a change ever affected how your data is handled, we would explain it in the app before it took effect.
